Desert Safety & Wildlife Awareness
Southeastern Utah is an incredible place to explore, filled with breathtaking scenery, unique wildlife, and rugged beauty. While the desert is generally very safe and enjoyable, it’s important to remember that this is a remote outdoor environment where nature should always be respected.
During your stay and while hiking or exploring nearby trails, you may encounter native wildlife and natural hazards including rattlesnakes, cactus, stinging insects, bobcats, mountain lions, uneven terrain, and extreme temperatures.
Most wildlife prefers to avoid humans, and encounters are rare, but we encourage all guests to use common outdoor safety practices:
- Stay aware of your surroundings while hiking or walking at night
- Wear sturdy shoes and watch where you step or place your hands
- Keep children close and pets supervised at all times
- Avoid approaching or feeding wildlife
- Carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months
- Use caution around cactus, rocky ledges, and desert terrain
- Shake out shoes and gear if left outside overnight
